CPIM Part 1 - Basics of Supply Chain Management (BSCM) Course

This is the first of two APICS courses designed for the student interested in becoming CPIM certified, but is also an outstanding stand-alone program for those wanting a thorough understanding of supply chain management. In the BSCM course, you get a complete analysis of top down planning from long term Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP), operational Master Production Scheduling (MPS), and tactical Production Activity Control (PAC). This professionally led instructor course will engage participants on how the alignment and measurement of this hierarchy can be utilized to optimize production, inventory, and supply chain productivity. 

Throughout the course multiple exercises, demonstrations, and activities are conducted to review, enhance, and deepen the participants’ knowledge. This is an accelerated program where given the synergies among classes this we will be a 5-week course. For CPIM exam process and reconfiguration details, click here

Course Outline and Objectives

  • Introduction to Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management:manufacturing environment and processes, supply chain management, planning and control techniques
  • Demand Management: demand characteristics, forecasting principles, forecasting techniques, tracking forecast variation and error
  • Master Planning: S&OP and production planning, master scheduling and master production scheduling, master scheduling and sales
  • Material Requirements Planning (MRP): objectives of MRP, bills of material (BOM), MRP logic, using and managing the priority plan
  • Capacity Management and Production Activity Control (CRP and PAC):phases and definition of capacity, capacity requirements planning, determine available capacity, PAC scheduling and loading techniques, order release process, input/output control measurement
  • Aggregate Inventory Management: functions of inventory, carrying costs, ordering costs, stockout costs, inventory valuation, financial inventory performance measures
  • Item Inventory Management: lost-size decision rules, economic order quantity (EOQ), understand order point systems, safety stock, ABC inventory control principles and process, physical inventory and cycle counting techniques
  • Purchasing and Physical Distribution: purchasing objectives and activities, interface with production and finance, objectives and types of distribution inventory planning systems, transportation and the cost of moving goods, warehousing process and activities
  • Lean and Quality Systems: product and quality systems, quality function deployment and value to the customer, total quality management, Lean principles, tools, and techniques
  • Theory of Constraints: philosophy and basics principles, types of constraints, drun-buffer-rope technique, critical-chain method

Dates: April 9th – May 7th. This is an accelerated program.

Time: Monday evenings from 5:45 pm - 9:15 pm. (we are allotting a little extra time to make certain all of the material is covered each night, but may not be required)

Payment and Registration:

Individual Course Fee: $995 (members)/ $1195 (non-members) per student.Registration includes the CPIM 1 Participant Guide and E-learning system ($345 value). If you would like to have your Participant Guide sent to you prior to class, please provide your address to the course instructor by March 19th. 

Group Discount: Companies registering 3 or more participants receive $100 discount per registration. 

Maintenance Point Fee: For APICS certification designees the cost is $350 (member/non-member). Price does not include the CPIM 1 Participant Guide and E-learning system. Attendees receive 1 maintenance point for every hour of operations management related training. 

Credit Card Payment: Please fill out the online registration form by March 28th.

Payment By Check: Please RSVP with the instructor by March 28th. Payment is due the first night of class. Make checks payable to “APICS Baltimore Chapter”.

Refunds and Cancellations: Refunds are permitted up to two weeks in advance of the course start date as classes are held based upon class size.

Is my registration/ticket transferrable? Registration is transferable up to one week prior to the class start day.

What is the refund policy? Class size determines the viability of hosting a course, therefore, refunds are only permissible up to two weeks prior to the course start date. Refunds are not permitted due attendee's absence. 

Do I need to take the exam? No. It is not necessary to take the CPIM exam as course participation is encouraged for professional, supply chain development. For those interested in pursuing their CPIM designation, the course fee does not include the cost for taking the CPIM Part 1 Exam.
